D is one of the most handy fellas I’ve ever encountered.
I liked it so I put a ring on it.
He pretty thoroughly remodeled his house before we sold it last year, and I was completely impressed by how he either already knew how to do everything, or if he didn’t, he figured it out and it turned out great.
The island in our kitchen is no exception.
The man is not only a wizard of a handyman, he’s also well versed in Craigslist and adept at finding sweet deals. One of those deals included several applewood boards salvaged out of boxcars that carried wine.
This is the only picture I can find of it pre-island.
Sure, It looks a little rough, but it had been sitting behind some guy’s house for the last 35 years and it cleans up beautifully. I can’t even tell you how heavy those boards are. We saved four of them to make a harvest table, and D and I had to carry them one at a time. So very heavy. And those round things are pulleys. One came from a limestone quarry, and the other out of a grain elevator. Some day, they will be the gable ends on the house.
But I digress.
My D made us a beautiful island with them. And my dad helped with the heavy lifting and photo taking.
Disclaimer: Fuzzy photos compliments of my dad’s “kind of” smart phone.
He used the applewood for the majority of the island, and trimmed it in cedar.
Indeed, those white spots ARE bird poop stains. It’ll wash. I think.
And then, after he got done with the island.. he figured he might as well tile the kitchen too.
And in true MacGyver fashion, he celebrated by mudding in the front yard.
Just kidding. He wasn’t mudding. He was delivering the refrigerator from the garage where it wouldn’t fit around the corner, to the removed-from-it’s-hinges front door.
I wish I was kidding.

The island looks AMAZING!
That island is beautiful! Oh man how wonderful and beautiful!
Can your man, and my man hang out sometime, maybe then your mans skillz will rub off on mine
D does a good job girlie! You married yourself a good one there. And he doesn’t look half bad on a bike either…was that out loud?
You lusting after my husband again??
So pretty…even with the poop.
hahahaa..
Wow! Your island looks amazing! I love that you were able to use reclaimed wood for the base:) and the tile turned out fabulously too, the materials really complement each other.
It’s looking great! You definitely found yourself a good man! I’m hoping Shayne and I can learn some skills through our renovations. Not sure we’ll ever reach MacGyver status though!
You guys find the coolest stuff!! It looks amazing! You’ve got yourself a real Macgyver. It looks like that fridge delivery was a good time
I wish I’d taken video! That crazy man…
Wow! He is quite a handy guy! Your house is going to be amazing!
Hooray for handy men!
Also, bird poop shmird poop. It’ll be fiiiiiiine. Unless your little man goes around licking things. That’s not something toddlers do, is it?!
Nahhhhh… not mine, anyway.
SO PRETTY! I love that it looks old and like it’s been there for 100 years. MacGuyver did well!
Gorgeous! Did he use an orange, curling iron, and an icepick to get the job done like the REAL MacGyver? Just kidding! Is the “official” move-in date soon?
Amy – another beautiful treasure in your house. OMG – your D is fantastic!!!
P.S. We just got some cedar posts real cheap because they were covered in bird poop – it went perfect with the old fence.
Awesome! Can’t wait to see what you do with them.
That island is awesome! You could sleep on that thing. Go D!
The island is beautiful! Once again, D did an amazing job!
I laughed out loud at the title of this! My guy is totally hopeless with a hammer (I actually hide tools from him) so I am super impressed D’s handiwork. It’s absolutely beautiful! And then he tiled the kitchen floor? You’ve definitely found yourself a keeper!
He’s amazing, Meghan. I’m very lucky!
D is awesome! And so is the house
What a gorgeous island…MacGyver did it again!!

They are the best!!
And here I thought he was Brad Pitt. He’s much to young to be MacGuyver.
~Bliss~
How beautiful! Minus the bird poop. But I’m sure it’ll wash off…
Holy crap. D got skillz. That thing is sweeet. Anything with reclaimed wood that looks like that? damn.
Aren’t you blessed. So glad I found you via One House One Couple. I’m a new follower, and I would love if you stopped by, Lori
Amy, you crack me up (or I guess D cracks me up)! Look at that truck! Still, your island and floor are awesome – I can’t wait to see the whole kitchen finished. And I’m sure I’ll enjoy your stories along the way.
Thanks, Tisha!

Love the island – and those pulleys – I will be pulling my own MacGyver and sneaking over in the dark of night to snag them for myself!

I married a McGyver in training, is it fair that I am doing the training?
But that’s what fathers and brothers are for in my family.
All the new details are so fun, I love the progress. And I hear bird poop looks great with a coat of varnish on it.
Love that island! It looks just like one I pinned on Pinterest for my brothers house. You ar so lucky to have a hubby (and Dad) who are handy, I am thankful everyday that I have that too (although not quite to your level:)
