Hitting a Wall

Literally.

D works a weird schedule sometimes, as he is on call most of the time.

That fact + a baby = extra thick bedroom walls in the new house.

Extra thick bedroom walls + a baby = a mama worried I wouldn’t be able to hear him.

Enter the baby monitor.

Junior is usually a really good sleeper – always has been.  We are very lucky like that.  But on his first night in the new house, he woke up and cried and daddy went to him.  On the second night, he woke up and cried and mommy went to him.

Except mommy wasn’t as familiar with the new lay of the land as I thought I was.  We are kind of in the boonies and our little road has no street lights.  Our exterior lights aren’t in yet, and apparently what neighbors we do have don’t believe in them.

It was dark in there, yo.

So I’m zombie walking my way through the house, following the sound of Junior, when.. literally.. I hit a wall.

The scene of the crime.

I stand there dumbfounded for a minute or two thinking “I know we didn’t put a door on the hallway.”

“…Did we?”

With that thought, I fumble around for a doorknob to no avail.  Not knowing what else to do, I turn around to go back the way I came to make D help me find Junior’s room at which point I see the glow from Junior’s monitor.  Gotta be close.

Uh, yeah.  I was close, all right.

By the time I rounded the corner, Junior had already fallen back to sleep.

Mommy Fail.

  1. That is hilarious!! Thanks for making me bust out laughing. :) I’m laughing with you though, this is something I would do!

On a bright note since he went back to sleep by himself, maybe he’ll realize he is okay there & start sleeping through the night again.

  2. It always takes a while to get settled into a new place. But please, Amy, don’t beat yourself up that he was back to sleep before you got there. In my day (now I sound old), we didn’t even have baby monitors, so the child was wide awake before we even heard them.

Just enjoy this newness. I’m just happy you’re in so that you CAN hit yourself on an unfamiliar wall.

  3. Oh my gosh, Amy! That’s hilarious, in a not-so-funny kind of way. I can just picture you wondering through the dark trying to find your way, lol. At least Junior fell asleep while you were on your adventure through the dark. Hope you get to installing an exterior light soon, or just get one of those cheap nightlights and plug it in the hall way :)
