Girl Power

May 31, 2012 - Author: Amy - 26 Comments

I kind of hate that saying… “girl power”.  It simultaneously brings to mind the Spice Girls and “turtles in a half shell – TURTLE POWER!”

Wait.  Wouldn’t it be fun if the Spice Girls and the Ninja Turtles had a throw down?  It’s true that the Ninja Turtles have some wicked MMA skills, but the Spice Girls have Scary and Sporty Spice, who I bet fight dirty with their acrylic finger claws and bedazzled brass knuckles.  They would probably make nunchucks out of microphones and hide switch blades in lipstick tubes.  And then there’s poor Donatello trying to fend them off with his stick.

I digress.

My point today is that in addition to all the fine help we’ve received from the strapping men in our lives, we’ve had some serious assistance from the ladies as well.

My MIL has a green thumb the likes of which the Jolly Green Giant would be envious and I’ll be relying solely on her to spruce up our outdoor area.  She started this week by planting a Rose of Sharon (which made me smile because her name is Sharon) bush she’d given me for Mother’s Day.

She planted it near the entrance of our driveway so it will greet us when we come home.  awww…

We set my mom loose on the windows because they needed a good scrubbing before we put the screens on.  I handed her a bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels, but she wasn’t satisfied with the streaks left behind so last night she showed up with her own cleaning weapons in hand.

Recipe for streak-free windows:

2 cups water

1/4 cup vinegar

1/2 tsp dish soap

Wipe with newspaper (not paper towels!) and voila!  Sparkly clean windows.

Much better!

Little Junior couldn’t help but want in on the action.

And Nanny couldn’t help taking a break to play.

Then Junior decided he needed to mess up check out Nanny’s work.

Where was I while all this work was being done, you ask?  Certainly not just taking pictures and eating all the food Sharon brought over.  I was painting, yo!

Tah dahhh!!

Have you ever used newspaper to clean windows before?  I’d never heard of such a thing, but it works!

Who is your money on in a fight to the death?  Spice Girls or Ninja Turtles?

  1. My Noni also uses newspapers to clean windows & mirrors. I use coffee filters!
I was always a spice girl fan (POSH of course!) I had a huge book of spice girls stickers haha! They would totes kick butt. Sorry turtles!

  2. I’ve never heard of newspaper to clean the windows either, but I may have to give that a try. My windows could use a serious cleaning!

  3. I’ve heard of the newspaper thing before, but have never done it. To be perfectly honest….I’ve never really cleaned the windows at our house. Probably should…

Your tangent at the beginning of this post made my day. As a former Spice Girls fan…my money’s on them!

  4. Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I’m think the spice girls would dominate in that situation. I’ve never heard of newspapers to clean windows but I should probably give it a go. It would certainly be an improvement on my current strategy of just ignoring them.

  5. Never knew you could use newspaper to clean windows…and a DIY cleaner better than Windex? I just might have to try! I might have to go Ninja turtles on this one.

  6. I think those turtles would do a number on the Spice Girls! I’ve heard of the newspaper trick, but I have to try it! The paint colors look awesome!

  7. LOVE your first paragraph lol – my money’s on the Spice Girls! It’s funny that your mom uses newspaper for windows, my mom always uses newspaper instead of paper towels too! And your mom looks just like you!!

Also I just remembered you’re in KS, that’s where I’ve been for the last four days :) Outside of Witchita.

First of all… no one beats the turtles… ever! Have you seen the SHOES those Spice girls wear? They can barely walk in them let alone fight a pack of irradiated weapon-wielding reptiles to the death in them!

Second of all, yes… the newspaper thing is one of my favorite life hacks! Who thinks up this stuff anyway? My guess is someone was out of paper towels and needed clean windows OMGNOW so they used what was laying around. Desperation begets ingenuity!

  9. My mom used newspapers for cleaning windows. I never have any newspapers on hand though.

Girl Power!! I’m sold on the recipe, and the newspapers. Beware though if you have a fresh manicure. Even my stubs-of-nails managed to grab plenty of black, but nothing a little polish remover won’t clean up. Super job on the painting too :)

  11. i think the turtles would win, just sayin.
and everything is looking SO good!
i worked at a gym and we used newspaper to clean the mirrors… i was amazed at how well it worked, and it’s greener than using paper towels.

  12. Spice Girls!!!! They can multi-task (unlike their male counterparts). Used vinegar to clean windows but never added the dish soap and yes to the newspaper – it really works. Don’t know why, but it does.

It must be beginning to feel like home by now!!

  13. I have heard of it! My mom has always done it. Your MIL and mom are too cute (and super nice for all their help!).

Um, I’m gonna have to go with the Turtles.

  14. I vaguely remember hearing something about using newspaper on windows. It sounds really weird though because I always thought the ink would get all over the glass when it got wet. Guess not.

I think I’m going to have to go with the Ninja Turtles. They are my husband’s favorite. He even has a Ninja Turtle Snuggie. :)

  15. We usually just use water and vinegar and water when we make a cleaning spray but I’m definitely going to have to try your mom’s trick of adding dish soap and using newspaper!

  16. I definitely have used newspaper before! My roommate in college introduced me to that method and I thought she was crazy at first…until I saw the results!

Thanks for the recipe for your mom’s magic potion…I’ll definitely be trying it out! :)

  17. Dude, the Turtles definitely! I may be a little biased because I am a bit anti-Spice Girl. I’m kinda trying to forget my whole Backstreet Boy/Spice Girl stage of life.

  18. First, when I think ‘girl power’, I always think of Sheera, princess of power! Do you remember that cartoon. And second, you’re supposed to clean windows? :)

  19. Girl power does always remind me of the Spice Girls, but I’m sorry the Ninja Turtles would kick their butts any day of the week. They’re ninjas. ‘Nuff said.
Although I have heard of using newspaper to clean windows I’ve never use it – I’ve always used coffee filters.

  20. oh yeah newspaper most definitly works! Something my mom told me as well :) Mommas knows best!

  21. Definitely the Ninja Turtles! I’ll have to try that newspaper trick, our windows are a mess. Did anyone ever tell you that you’re really photogenic and you look like you’re 15 :P

  22. What a cool trick for cleaning windows! I’ll definitely try that out! I was cracking up about how the newly cleaned windows didn’t last long with Junior around. I know that feeling all too well. LOL

Oh, and my money is on the Ninja Turtles. My husband would throttle me if I picked the Spice Girls over them. The “Turtles” are kind of a favorite of his from childhood. :) TURTLE POWER!

  23. You look like your mama! And she looks like she could be in a commercial for happy window washers with that smile. :) I have used newspaper to clean glass, and it works great!

My friends and I definitely pretended to be the Spice Girls when we were growing up.

  24. My money’s on the ninja turtles, because how do you defend against nunchucks? Although you raise an important point about the uselessness of Donatello’s stick-thing.

  25. Better yet, the Turtles and Spice Girls should get married and have babies!!! :-)

  26. OMG your windows looks AMAZING! I am trying that solution 100 percent!
