Progress in the Master

A couple months back, before we moved into the house, my diminutive grandma

and I were strolling through Sears and happened to stumble upon a sale in the bedding section.  A comforter caught my eye, and I took it home.

When we finally got moved in I was able to unwrap the comforter and put it on the bed for my first view of it in all it’s anticipated glory.  And it was ok.

I liked the pretty gatherings and the contrast of the white against the black bed.  But it made me think of a cow in a wedding dress.  Cute and all, but just not right.

Enter Target.

I accidentally found myself in their home section recently whereupon a different comforter caught my eye.  And it also came home with me.

Muuuuch better.  The gray feels like a more natural conduit between the softness I want in the bedroom and the rustic feel of the rest of the house.  The pattern sewn in to this one feels more structured and for whatever reason makes me think of the exposed beams in the living room.

The gray also ties in to our bathroom better, where we’ve got lots of earth toned stone and slate, and black onyx counter tops.

I also picked up some too-short-curtains for the french doors..

(Privacy.  It’s a good thing.)

…that lead to our newly built deck!

So all I’ve got left to do in the master area is the fun stuff - decorate the deck by planting flowers in some rusty things, and find some side tables and art for the bedroom… aaaand learn how to sew longer curtains.

Who wants to sew me some longer curtains help??

  1. I love the pattern on that Target comforter! And we have almost the same one that you originally picked out in our bedroom. (Great minds…)

I am veryyy jealous of that cute deck off your master. What a wonderful place to relax and unwind! :)

  2. It looks great, Amy. I liked the first comforter too, but you’re right – it was a bit fussy for the rest of the house. Cow? Wedding dress? I love it. As for the curtains – why don’t you sew a band of contrasting fabric across the bottom about 1′ deep to give it the length you want. If you like the rest of the curtains, it should be an easy fix.

Have a great weekend. When is the hot tub coming for that deck?

  3. I have the exact same problem with my curtains in the Den. They are about an inch and a half too short and it drives me crazy! When I ordered my curtains for the bedroom I decided to get 96 inch panels and hem them myself. We will see how that goes :)

  4. I agree with you – the grey bedspread is much nicer than the white (I liked it a lot, it was just too white for the room… maybe in the future, you can dye it?). Also, I am still in love with that bathroom and I love the mini chandeliers on the sides of the bed. Apparently I just noticed that detail!

For the curtains, you should just sew a band of a fabric you like along the bottom. Simple fix!

  5. I do love comforter #1 too … can you send that wedding dress over this way?

As for the curtains, you can just sew a band of fabric on the bottom. You know, like black or even a patterned band … or, depending on how much you need to lengthen them you could also try a band of ribbon.

Is the pup home again or was that an old picture of the master bath?

  6. Your bedside lamps make me dance! I love them much. I do prefer the gray to the white myself too. Good choice. This place is looking spectacular. Like a show home! My heart sighed when I saw Winnie. :(

  7. I love how you say that you accidentally found yourself in the home decor aisles, lol! That’s a good one, I’m going to start using that whenever I buy something for the apartment. I accidentally wondered into the aisle, and accidentally put some things in the cart… oops!

  8. Love the grey one, I loved the first one too (it reminds me of one from West Elm) but I agree that the grey works better in that room.

  9. But wait, what did you do with the old one?? I remember you had an inspiration pic with a fluffy girly white bed. It looks great with the gray. I think your curtains need a ruffle at the bottom. :)
